Several experts had helped me begin planning an anniversary trip that was supposed to happen in Feb 2015. That trip was going to kick off with 1 one full day (2 nights) in SF before driving down the coast.
I had an excellent, exciting itinerary worked out thanks to the great advice on these boards. BUT fast forward to last week when my husband was laid off and some touch decisions had to be made. Thankfully we are salvaging the trip but in order to do so we need to bump it up to July and go through the budget with a fine toothed comb. Sadly we had to cut out our 2 nights in SF, but we will now be flying into Oakland (arriving at 11am) and do not have to be in Monterey (where we are staying the first 3 nights of 8) until evening. We would be happy with getting there in time for sunset or to make it to the Monterey farmers market (arriving on a Tuesday in late July).
If I am thinking this through correctly we should have about 4 hours we can spend in SF. We are of course eliminating most of what we hoped for and are now trying to just get a taste of the area. This is the new plan...
- Arrive in OAK @ 11am & pick up rental car
- Drive over Bay bride into SF
- In SF we would like to accomplish a cable car ride, view of the Golden Gate Bridge & a quick but awesome lunch. Tentative plan (): Go to Powell St & take cable car ride to Wharf area (can we hop on and off? there was an italian deli we were hoping to grab lunch at in North Beach...) View Golden Gate Bridge from wharf area, take trolley along Embarcadero around back toward Powell. Drive down to Monterey along coast (through Pacifica) with limited stops. We will be doing day trips to SC and Henry Cowell while staying in Monterey).
Please, any input on plausibility and timing? I considered a Dylan's Tour but the hope was to be out of the car for those few hours. Not sure if we have time to rent bikes...Thanks again for your help!
