traffic on PCH south in October

Have read that traffic is a challenge going south on PCH from SF. Is that true year round? How would it be the first weekend in October? Better? Worse? Same? Is it bumper to bumper stopped dead kind of traffic or congested but moving?

There are some areas that you will find a lot of traffic, but that has to do with the commute. Outside of commute hours and population centers, it isn't a problem. What is your route (ie. how far south are you planning to go) and what time and day of the week will you be leaving SF?

There's a backup at the Highway 1 and Highway 92 interchange in HMB during morning rush hour. And if it's really hot inland, there will be a lot of traffic from people coming to the coast to escape the heat. Otherwise, traffic shouldn't be too bad.

Those October weekends have pumpkin festivals in Half Moon Bay which can cause gridlock. Mid-day might be a bad time to go through there.

The coastal road south of SF is highway 1 and called PCH in Southern California. There is commute traffic around Santa Cruz on weekdays and perhaps a tad bit on Sunday evening but other than that no issues

I would frankly focus on what to do and see and about activities and hotels and restaurants and not worry about traffic .

Perhaps people were talking about being held up by slow drivers on Hwy. 1 (not traffic as in bumper-to-bumper). You can sometimes get behind a slow RV or someone who is distracted by the gorgeous view. I figure I average about 35 mph on the Big Sur portion, but you can't go highway speeds on any of it even with an empty road.

That's Fleet Week weekend, isn't SF locals? We were in SF a few years ago to watch the Blue Angels on Friday during Fleet Week and left Saturday afternoon around 12:30 pm, taking Highway 1 south from Pacifica and got stuck in horrendous traffic through Half Moon Bay.

I would take I-280 south to Highway 92 west to Half Moon Bay and start the drive from there to avoid any possible traffic on Highway 1 between Pacifica and Half Moon Bay. That junction is where the traffic opened up freely.

The Pumpkin Festival may not be going on but thousands of folks go to Half Moon Bay on October weekends to pick their Halloween pumpkins. We have run into this traffic and it's not pretty. Hwy 92 is what most of them take to get there.

Fleet Week is the second weekend of October this year.
