Help San fran

Hi

So planning trip for end September for 2 weeks plan to start in LA then make way up to San fran..

Is there an amount of time you would suggest?

Anything you can suggest doing that isn't main tourist attractions

Would you suggest renting car?

Cheap/nice accommodation recommendations

Thanks

I'm driving from vegas to Yosemite to San Fran in April. Apparently Yosemite is a must do. Maybe check it out

<<Is there an amount of time you would suggest?>>

If you're referring to the amount of time in San Francisco, we usually recommend 3-4 full days.

Have a read through our Top Questions on the right side (or second sticky on the forum if you're using the mobile app). There are ones there on "Off the Beaten Path" and why NOT to have a car while in the city.

After reviewing those, let us know if you have any specific questions. And feel free to be verbose, this isn't Twitter. The more info you give about your preferences, travel style, people you're traveling with (kids? ages?) the more our responses will be specifically tailored to you.

Most first time tourists stay 3-4nights in SF itself although few people complain their visit was too long.

With a 2 week trip to CA, that would be reasonable depending on how much time you allocate to LA, San Diego,

Central Coast / Monterey, and Yosemite.

Kelly, September's a great time to visit San Francisco. Hotel rates can be expensive - especially in September; don't wait forever for reservations. You might want ones that can be cancelled without fee in case you see some later bargain, but I wouldn't count on it.

Most people will not consider any decent hotel room rate in SF cheap. The best I can recommend is to dollar cost average. Shop for some hotel deals during the preceding part of your visit accepting San Francisco will be high.

You will not need a car in San Francisco - actually having one is an expensive nuisance. That will save some bucks.

I would want 4 nights in SF, 3 works. Once your plane and hotel reservations are in place, if you want to visit Alcatraz, book it promptly. It's only accessible by boat and those tours book up early.

After everything else falls in place and your trip is near, then ask us about non-touristy things to do. People who live in the City find lots of fun things to do without being tourists; you can join in if you like.

Pancakes, your right, Yosemite is a wonderful stop en route from Vegas to San Francisco. If you'd like some advice, you might drill up to the California thread for advice about the drive, the Yosemite thread for it, and also, for San Francisco, start a separate thread [if you haven't already done so] to not conflate your posts with Kelly who started this one.

We have always spent 3/4 nights in SF and I have realised that SF is one place where its not worth skimping on budget. You can get something cheap but if you want somewhere good, be prepared to pay for it. Our previous trips, SF has been the last leg of the holiday and we felt its better to pay extra for a better hotel after an initial slightly disappointing hotel in our first visit.
