Ferry Mill Valley to San Francisco

We are staying in Mill Valley one night in early September. Our plan is to take the ferry from Mill Valley to eat (crab?) in San Francisco and then take the ferry back. Anything we should know? Can you recommend any casual place to eat close to the landing? What if we miss the last boat? Thanks K

The ferrys leave from either Sausalito or Larkspur beginning around 7 am weekdays and 11 am weekends; the last boat out of San Francisco leaves about 8 pm weekdays and 6:30 pm weekends. In San Francisco, they all arrive at the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero -- it's a longish walk to the Wharf, but it's also very close to the financial district, and you can get the best seafood in the City at Tadich Grill on California St that's about five blocks away.

If you miss the last boat, your options are either Golden Gate Transit (the bus) or a cab; the latter would prove a little costly to Mill Valley, but wouldn't be outrageous to Sausalito.

You can also take the ferry from Tiburon, which is a little closer to Mill Valley than either Sauslito or Larkspur. Fewer boats, but worth checking the schedule. You can hang out at Sam's or Guymas and have a few beers when you get back.
