Accommodations in Marathon?

We are looking at staying in Marathon for three nights with the intention of taking day trips into the park. Is this a reasonable plan or should we wait until we can get reservations within the park?

No need to wait. Did you try Terlingua for accommodations? A bit closer to the basin. Marathon is fine but the train runs through town in the middle of the night so take ear plugs! I think The Gage will supply ear plugs.

Marathon is a good place to stop on the way to/from BB but I would not make it a base to tour the park as it's too far away. E.g. It's a four hour drive to Santa Elena Canyon from Marathon compared to 1.5 hrs from Chisos Mountains Lodge or Terlingua. I suggest you wait until you can get at least one night preferably two in Chisos Mountains Lodge. Utilize Marathon and Terlingua as well if they fit your plan.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will look onto Terlingua. Do you know if the train go by Eves Garden B&B? That is where we plan on staying.

Terlingua is like Marathon--tiny little towns, both of which require drives into the park. In addition, if the security checkpoint is open, you will be stopped by Border Patrol agents on your way to and from Marathon and the park. If you can swing it, staying at the lodge in the park is so much better IMO--you can spend your time seeing and doing in the park instead of driving back and forth. Marathon is about a 70 minute drive to the entrance to the park, then another 30 minutes from there to the visitor center at Panther Junction.

Inside the park is nice. So is the Gage in Marathon. If you book the Gage, you choose between the original brick building with it's small vintage ranch style rooms or the Spanish style annex. Choose the annex. It is not so far from the national park as to be a problem. (Of course, that can be relative, depending on where you are from. On many ranches out there, the house is 20 miles from the front gate. Always reserve at the Gage.
