Camping near Gunnison

We are thinking of camping at Lakeview campground near Gunnison CO. Has anyone camped there? Can you give me some recommendations of what to do (must do's) while we are there? We are bringing our 5 year old son.

Lakeview is in Taylor Park, which is a ways from Gunnison and Crested Butte but close to the Taylor Lake Marina for fishing and boat rental, and the Taylor Park General Store & Restaurant if you need supplies or a nice dinner or piece of pie. The area is popular for ATV or motorcycle riding and jeeping. There's fishing in the lake and lots of hiking and mountain biking. There's river rafting at Almont. For a change of pace you could drive to Gunnison, which has a nice rec center, shopping and restaurants. Also, drive over to Crested Butte.

For your son, I'd suggest bringing a kite to fly, as there's lots of open space to run along the lake, plus toys for digging and building in the dirt and a couple of bags of cheap plastic animals, dinosaurs, cowboys, Indians, horses, soldiers, firefighters or whatever.

It would take a little over an hour to drive to either Crested Butte or Gunnison from Taylor Park where Lakeview Campground is located. The "must-do" in Taylor Park is just enjoying the outdoors and relaxing, fishing as mentioned above, and maybe a drive to Tin Cup, a historic almost-ghost-town and Cottonwood Pass.

There's a children's museum/fun place at Mt. Crested Butte:

Mt. Crested Butte has an Adventure Park and a summer Adventure Camp day program for kids that would be a lot of fun, I'm sure. And a chair lift ride is always fun.

You also might check the library for any children's activities going on.

And Gunnison has the Pioneer Museum with a car exhibit and train exhibit that might be fun for your little guy.

There's a pontoon boat ride on Morrow Point Reservoir in the Black Canyon/Curecanti National Recreation area...a bit of a drive but not too far from where you'll be. You'll have to judge whether it would be fun or boring for your son--just depends on the kid!

You might even drive on to The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park to see the depths of the Canyon along the South Rim Scenic Drive...lots of easy walks/hikes. Kids usually love it because it is deep & awesome and rocky and it makes them "tingle," in the words of my granddaughter. Overlooks have fences/rails but you do have to keep an eye on children. I like the boat tour, but you don't really get a good idea of the depths of the canyon from the boat because so much is underwater.

misspWestSlope has great ideas for the area. I too would suggest day trips to nearby Gunnison, Crested Butte and Black Canyon. The Morrow Point Tour is great as well. Taylor Park is a small, quiet beautiful and serene area and big ATV area as pointed out. The Reservoir is a nice location to enjoy the scenic beauty. There's some neat off roads if you have a good vehicle that surround the area and nearby Almont. Also in Gunnison is a big community pool and a couple waterslides indoors to enjoy as well.

Lake Irwin Campground is another excellent place to go camping with many hiking trails close by and beautiful views everywhere. The camp host this year is very friendly and active. The lake is great for fishing or for non-motorized boats like kayaks or canoes. In Crested Butte you may want to check out Three Rivers Outpost for a variety of outdoor activity options from rafting and fishing to horseback riding.
