Best, most scenic route to Asheville

Driving from Atlanta to Asheville this weekend with the wife and I would appreciate any suggestions on which path I should take to get there? I will be using I-85 N. Also any recommendations on what to do and eat would also be appreciated. Thank you in advance for the help.

Your quickest way is 85 to Spartanburg and pick up 26 from there. I-26 is a nice drive and fairly scenic. If you want to get off the interstate, pick up Highway 25 in Greenville and take that through Hendersonville to Asheville. Stop in downtown Hendersonville to visit the shops and eat. I like that route. Best wishes.

A nice alternative is to take the I-985/US 23/US 441 route towards Gainesville, following through Tallulah Falls and Clayton, Ga, and on to Dillsboro, NC where you'll pick up the Great Smoky Mountains Expressway into Asheville. This is a beautiful drive, mostly four lanes, and you avoid all the I-85 traffic in the Greenville/Spartanburg area. I highly recommend it!

Yes, as arbyunc recommends, try this route from Atlanta, to get you more scenic mountain views and really no difference in time verses the 85 route.... http://tinyurl.com/ykmmhyk There are also several nice waterfalls near this route..http://www.franklin-chamber.com/visitorInformation/waterFallsMap.asp Stop in Franklin and eat at Fat Buddies for some great BBQ and real southern, mountain decor! My husband loves the ribs. www.fatbuddiesribsandbbq.com/default.htm

In Asheville, I love the big attraction, Biltmore estate and gardens...enough to see and do to fill an entire day or two. The historic downtown is neat too with it's art culture, shops and restaurants. Take a drive out on the Blue Ridge Parkway; if you head south on it from Asheville there are some amazing overlooks to stop and enjoy. Also some great trails to hike in the area... http://www.romanticasheville.com/hiking.html

Just a great website for everything in and around Asheville.. http://www.romanticasheville.com/index.html
