Asheville in winter

Am planning a trip at the end of January but was wondering how bad the snow/roads get in Asheville at that time.

Does the blue ridge close down then or does it depend on the roads?

Thanks!

If there is snow, the BRP closes down. You can access it with snow shoes or x-country skiis, but it is gated and cars are "verboten". Asheville and WNC don't have a huge amount of snow removal equipment, so roads get plowed on a "need" basis from most to least important.

While this area pretty much shuts down when there is snow, there ARE places that stay open, especially in the downtown area. You'll just slip and slide getting there!

Cheers- Keith

Whoops- meant to add that weather here is very finicky in the winter. As a native, it's been my experience that weather systems headed west to east don't usually provide a large snowfall - it's the storms that come up from the LA and MS area that clobber us!

Cheers- Keith

Thanks Keith. I had hoped the roads would be clear but with snow on the ground for photography. Guess I'll just have to wait and watch the weather and see how it goes.

There are already 2 or 3 sections of Blue Ridge Parkway closed a couple days ago for repairs and will remain closed at least until spring. Usually the section near Asheville remains open but as already stated it all depends what weather brings.

Write this number down: (828) 298-0398 prompt (1) prompt (3). That is the BRP road closings number for North Carolina.

If your question is to find an area that will give you a good opportunity to take some winter photograpy you might want to consider HWY 441 that runs through the Smokey Mountain National Park from Cherokee to Gatlinburg. It is almost always open and plowed during winter, although there are times that they may require chains. The parkway will close at the first hint of snow. This would give you some great winter scenery to photograph.

We are coming to Asheville the Sunday after Thanksgiving and wondered if we would be able to get on the parkway. Is it north of asheville that is closed for repairs? Is south of Asheville open? Do you know how far Linville Caverns are from Asheville and if it's interstate driving as opposed to parkway and curvy2 lane mountain roads?

We are staying a few days at the Biltmore, but would like to do something scenic for my photographer husband. Since we are Florida drivers, we are always a little worried about snow and/or ice and road closures in the mountains.

We haven't been to NC in more than 5 years and don't really remember our way around that well. Any help you can give would be wonderful! Thank you!
