First timers- please advise us

We will be going to Asheville for the first time this summer. I think we will stay at the Holiday Inn Biltmore East?

We will be there 4 days- 2 adults in our fifties and a dog. So far, I think we will spend a day at the Biltmore Estate, a second day riding up the Blue Ridge Parkway and stopping along the way at various sights- which ones do you think?.We are also thinking about a Ghost tour and even maybe the Hot Air Balloon.

We would be grateful for any suggestions of things to do and see anywhere in Asheville-including the above things mentioned or anything you would suggest.

We would also be interested in favorite casual type restaurants- nothing too fancy- just yummy.

Thank-you so much in advance for helping us plan our trip!

Sounds like a good trip so far. Most hotels will sell you a 2 day pass to Biltmore Estate for the price of 1 day, so be sure to check on that. Biltmore has lots to do such as the house, gardens, winery, Antler Hill Village, etc... You could easily go back a second day and catch some beautiful scenery.

I would suggest Dupont Forest which is about 45 minutes south of Asheville, but great scenic hiking. Lots of waterfalls and your dog will love jumping in the water there too. Still one of my favorite spots. Our microbrew scene is very popular here, so if you like beer you could even take a BrewsCruise. Zambras, downtown AVL, is a great little environment and they serve tapas, The LAB is a brewery/restaurant that has a patio area to sit on, Packs Tavern is located on Packs Square and also has an outdoor patio. These are all very relaxed environments so nothing fancy.

When we go to Asheville, we make a point to go to Neo Cantina in Biltmore Village. Casual atmosphere, good food and nice patio. http://www.neocantina.com/

Occasionally, Grove Park Inn will have a weekend planned with special activities. Check their calendar.

Blue Ridge Parkway is beautiful. Consider bringing a picnic lunch and blanket. Once you get on the parkway, you will not want to get off!

All good suggestions above.

If you are even mildly interested in theater, check your schedule against the schedule for the Montford Park Players, who present Shakespeare in the Park in the historic Montford neighborhood, a few blocks north of downtown ...it is a permanent outdoor amphitheater and set...you take or rent lawn chairs, bring a picnic basket dinner or buy from the concession stand, bring your dog, a bottle of wine, enjoy really superb Shakespeare on a summer evening and they pass the hat at the end. A couple rare, really great comedies this summer!
