Help on Things to Do

Will be in Asheville the weekend of 10/14.

Can anyone suggest half-day activities (indoor or outdoor) that would be fun for an 11-year old boy. He loves art and science and getting his hands dirty if that helps.

Should we consider a LaZoom tour?

On a separate note, does it make sense to do a quick check of the national park for an afternoon or is it not worth the 1.5 hour drive to the park?

The Asheville CVB here. You could look into the Health Adventure as a fun indoor activitiy. There are plenty of ourdoor opportunities in Asheville so don't feel you have to drive out of your way to find them. The Blue Ridge Parkway offers a lot of hikes that will get you out in nature.

LaZoom is a great tour, and the haunted tours are always fun this time of year. Also the Eliada Homes has their Fields of Fun event happening with corn mazes and more.

Have fun!

Definitely get up on the Blue Ridge Parkway, as you'll be hitting what should be peak foliage in many areas up there. If you head south from Asheville on the Parkway up to the Mount Pisgah area, you can take U.S. 276 down the mountain a few miles to the Cradle of Forestry, which I think your son would find pretty cool. A few more miles down from there you'll be in prime waterfall land, including Looking Glass Falls, which you can see right from the road (276).

Fun Depot is a great option with lots to keep you busy!

I would suggest Dupont Forest too...Great relatively easy trails and lots of beautiful waterfalls to look at...bring your camera. (about an hour south of Asheville)

Blue Ridge Parkway drive would be great too!

LaZoom is a GREAT time, but I would check the ages...I hear that they just adjusted the age group, but am not sure if that is a correct statement or not.

Western NC Nature Center, IMO is a "don't miss" for any kid (and adults, too!): http://www.wncnaturecenter.com/

You might also consider the Cradle of Forestry Discovery Center in Pisgah National Forest:

An 11 year old boy who loves art, science and getting dirty, and nobody suggested a trip to the Biltmore Estate? The artwork is priceless, the architecture and turn of the century technology is fascinating to anybody with a mechanical mind and the fall activities for young folk at the Winery, the Farm and Antler Hill Village are endless, not to mention the miles and miles of trails for those who want to burn up energy. Its not inexpensive but there is a lot there.

Chimeny Rock is an hour or so drive, but it's also some fun hiking and great views. I would suggest taking Hwy 74 and going across the Hickory Nut Gorge area. The views are amazing and he could have fun at the Rock and you could also explore Lake Lure and maybe take a boat ride.

Craggy Gardens is a fun hike, my son loves it. Lots of tree roots and rocks to climb on and the view at the top is lovely. exploreasheville.com/what-to-do/…index.aspx
