Road Trip from FL

We are considering a RT from S Fl sometime in early September. We thought the Smokies, whatever and end up in Asheville for a few days. Maybe a 9 or 12 day trip.

We are in our late 50s and active, - raft or kayak, short hikes, sightsee, evening cocktails, picnic, chill out. Also, we like to stay in nice places - not mutch into kitcky motels.

Any suggestions? Also, when do the leaves turn in the smokies and blue ridge areas?

Peak leaf season is usually around 3rd week of October, depending on weather and elevation. You could drive to near Chattanooga and pick up the Cherola Scenic Pkwy, then US 129 north and enter GSMNP from the west. There are several routes in the Park, so get a map. Spend 2-3 days in and around the Park, winding toward Cherokee, NC on US 441. At Cherokee, NC, you could drive to Franklin or Sylva area and catch rafting on the Nantahala River. Or you could pick up the Blue Ridge Parkway and wind north toward Asheville. There are a few spots to pick up the parkway in this area if you choose rafting and end up north of Cherokee. Plan to spend a few days in and around Asheville if you're interested in good food and great brew pubs. I would say go north on the Parkway from Asheville, but a section between Asheville and Craggy Gardens is closed due to road damage, which is unfortunate because that is a particularly beautiful stretch. Hard to say when it will reopen. But you can go north and hike around Max Patch, Hot Springs, or take US 19 north toward Boone area ( you will need a map). But if you want to limit your north treks to Asheville, then plan a few days around Highlands and Cashiers and Brevard. Lots of waterfalls in that area. Make sure you book rooms ahead. That time of year there are NO rooms available to those who don't reserve. They at least used to have to put people up in the local gyms and armory because they're stranded with nowhere to stay.
