where to ski ? where to buy clothes for skiing verry cheap?

Hello,

We live in a tropical island and do not have winter clothes. because we will not longer use this type of clothing, we are looking for a shop to buy it at a very good price.

We are also looking for a family ski area near Boston to try to ski... (4 days).

Do you know if there is a place who makes combos for families? (ski pass and ski rental)

Is it an obligation to rent a car to get there? If so, is it easy to drive in December on the roads if you have never driven on snow?

That's a lot of questions ... But we would really appreciate you taking a moment to answer us.

A big thank-you!

There are a few ski areas about 15-35 miles from Boston. Blue Hills is the closest to Boston, but may not have snow when you come. Nashoba Valley and Ski Bradford are a little farther and maybe more likely to have and make snow. They all rent skis and have lessons.

You will have to rent a car and the roads are easy to drive on unless it is actively snowing, or has just recently snowed and they aren't cleared yet.

I think the best bet for inexpensive winter clothing would be Walmart maybe? It might not be durable, but you don't need it to be if you're only using it for 4 days. It will probably still be expensive to get clothing for the whole family.

Mount Wachusett is a bit further from the city, but on weekends you can take the MBTA commuter rail train to a stop near by and then ride a shuttle bus to the mountains. They have beginner packages that include rentals, lift and lesson.

As for clothing ... cheap and ski clothing are rarely seen in the same sentence. I know when I was young, beginners made due with long underwear and regular pants ... the 2nd link below has a section on clothing. You might want to check it out.

Many skiers do not wear actual "ski clothes." People wear just about anything that is warm and durable. Proper boots to work with the skis and keep your feet protected are the most important part of what you need.

You could consider a second hand store (Goodwill, Salvation Army) to pick up some ski pants, gloves, etc. for your trip. Obviously will be hit or miss.

Do you know how to ski? Honestly this probably isn't a very good idea. Clothing, transport, rentals and lift passes will cost a lot for a family and while it's subjective skiing isn't very fun if you don't know how to ski.

Thank you all for your help. It's nice to have answered so quickly.

I know it seems crazy to come from so far to ski for the first time and only 4 days, but the kids really want to do this exotic experience for them. We will follow your recommendations, we will ski with hot clothes, and if it is really the disaster, we will manage to find adequate clothes.

Is it easy to drive in December? Is there a lot of snow or ice on the road? Can we park at the bottom of the slopes?

And a very important question ... If skiing does not please us, are there things to be done in the winter sports area? (restaurants, toboggan, activities for children, shopping, etc.)

Thanks again for your answer!

Thank you. We probably will go to Nashoba valley. Walmart is a good idea if it's not possible to ski with normal warm clothes.

I help some Indian students here for graduate work find all kinds of winter gear - good deals at the Salvation Army. salvationarmyusa.org/usn/…

This is a big place and about 30 mins from Nashoba. Ski pants will be $10 & under and all of the other gear is very cheap as well.

It's good to wear clothes that are at least water resistant. Otherwise you'll get soaked and then cold.

I don't think they have tobogganing but they do have tubing, which is really fun.

Nashoba is in a nice area to live, but it's really quiet as far as restaurants, activities and shopping goes.
