2 week break next june.

My wife our daughter (4 year old) and myself are planning to come to New England next year. We want to stay in roughly 4 places for about 3/4 nights each.

Boston would be 1 of those places for 3 nights.

Could you guys out there suggest 3 other places to stay for 4 nights each. There must be plenty for youngsters in the area and 1 of the areas must be a beach resort. We will hire a car but I dont want to spend all the time driving!

So if possible all within a couple of hours of Boston.

We are coming from England and have never been before.

Any ideas would be great!!!

Thanks in ADVANCE.

Lots to choose from...New York City is a MUST see as well as Boston and the travel time is about 4 hours by car or a short 45min plane ride away. Depending on the amount you want to spend and time of year...Martha's Vinyard or Nantucket is a beach resort type area. Closer (and easier to get to) is Newport, RI, about 1hour and 30min from Boston, which has a few beach resort hotels/areas as well as sailing and I believe golfing...beautiful coastal town with incredible mansions. Washington D.C. is a good 8 hour drive away, but again, taking a plane is an option. And Maine has some beautiful coastal areas, yet not really a beach resort because it tends to be too cold. Do you have any specific ideas of what you want to see, do...etc. ?

Thanks for getting back to me.

I want to spend some time in New York in the future but not on this vacation.

We spend a lot of time doing family things on holiday, picnics, swimming, walking, playing, visiting zoos and animal farms.

We would fancy a whale trip, but also we want things for us parents to visit, whilst dining in quality restaurants.

I must admit I do quite fancy Cape cod and maybe Newport,Rhode island for 4 nights each as there not that far apart, but is there enough to see and do there?

My other choice might be the berkshires but not sure why.

I know its 180 miles from Newport how long would that take?

Whats there to see around there? With not knowing the area its hard to decide where to go, other that it looks nice and the weather is better than over here, but not too hot for my far skinned daughter.

newport is nice, but more of an adult thing. lots of shops, restaurants, mansions to tour. not really for kids. i would recommend maine; ogunquit/kennebunkport area. beautiful beach there. cape cod is wonderful. lots for kids to do there; very family oriented. definitely could pick up a whale watch there. boston is great, museum of science is fun, lots of hands-on things and the aquarium, take a duck tour. salem is fun for kids. you can actually take the commuter rail right out of boston for a day or two there. stay at the best western or the hawthorne in, right in the thick of things. i am sure other posters could add more.

Rhode Island is fantastic with lots of options for kids, actually - you wouldn't just have to limit yourselves to just Newport, though that would be a great place to stay (Narragansett would be my vote, though, for a great central spot - about an hour and 45 mins from Boston). Attractions: you can quickly and easily go to Pt Judith (in Narragansett, half an hr from Newport) where you grab the ferry across to Block Island and spend the day wandering (fantastic for kids, very old New England feel, friends with kids just did it and LOVED it). There's an adorable little fishing village at Pt Judith, great seafood, and some lovely beaches and a nearby lighthouse - Scarborough and Sand Hill Cove are popular beaches with families. Also in Rhode Island there are lots of nature walks (including Trustom Pond, for birds), there's Waterfire on Saturday evenings in Providence which includes music, fires lit on the river, dancing and other family fun, in the historic part of Providence, and the Roger Williams Zoo which provides fantastic educational exhibits for kids (the Boston Aquarium might be a good choice for that type of entertainment, too). I'm a biased RI native :) but I can certainly help you plan more than enough for four fantastic days there - it is the smallest state, so zipping between locations is quick and easy. Great food all around, too. Beaver Tail park in Jamestown is a combination beach/park, with a nautical museum, great for picnics and spending the day outside, and then you could eat at some of the fantastic Jamestown restaurants (that area is just minutes from Newport but it tends to be more locals, less tourists which is a nice change).

Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions - restaurants or lodging or anything!

The Berkshires are beautiful, but Vermont is gorgeous...

I'm completely biased as a native Vermonter, of course!

I recommend Vermont for 3 or 4 nights- the Woodstock, VT area is lovely with Quechee Gorge, Hanover, NH (home of Dartmouth College) and the Billings Farm and Museum for kids.

The White Mountains of NH are another excellent choice.

Franconia Notch area is stunning, with lots of things for the kids to do. The Franconia Inn is charming or for a grander experience, The Mt. Washington Hotel or The Balsams.

Happy travels!
