Where R African American Neighbourhoods!

Could you please tell me where are the African American neighbours in Boston located?

I'll be visiting shortly and want to be able buy urban wear, art & literature for a fraction of the price sold in tourist areas.

Thanks for your help!

Roxbury, Mattapan, Dorchester are the primary African-American neighborhoods, easily accessed via the Orange and Red lines on the subway.

You can also buy a lot of the urban clothings and stuff in Downtown Crossing.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think tourist prices apply to Africain American items in Boston. If you are looking for art & literature I would also check out Harvard square, they have a wonderful variety of book stores.

I have a few places for you to check out. The first is Eblens in Mattapan. Take the red line to Central Ave stop, walk up Central to River St. Eblens is at 90 River.

Also in Mattapan, but between the red and orange lines is Urban Concepts. Get on a Fairmount commuter rail train at South Station and take it to the Morton St. stop. The store will be a few doors down from the stop at 838 Morton St. Just remember that the commuter rail doesn't run as often as the subway, so check times for return trip into the city.

The third is Underground Hip Hop store at 234 Huntington Ave. Take a green "E" stop. They say the store is diagonally across from the station.

There are not many small (non-chain) bookstores of any genre that have survived as brick and mortar stores. This one is online:

The Black Library Booksellers

325 Huntington Avenue, Suite 83

Boston, MA 02115

Tel. (617) 442-2400

Toll Free (877)-548-1526

At the T stop at Dudley Square, there is a cart that sells some books with an Afro-centric cultural base.

That neighborhood also has Nubian Notion, one of the oldest little stores with a variety of products, including books, music and clothes.

As far as clothes, a lot of the kids seem to shop at Downtown crossing.

The chain store AJ Wright specializes in urban wear--cheap. Also the Tellos chain.

There is/was the new-ish Hip Hopz store on Highland Ave. (#217) in Somerville.

There are also some historic cultural sites you might be interested in:

Will: What is Eblen's? While we are on Mattapan; have you been to Simco's lately?

Hi Eileen,

Haven't been to Mattapan since I got lost one time. I found EbLens by doing a search for urban clothing stores in Boston. It looks like it is exactly what the poster is looking for. Here's the website.

Hi Will: If you get lost again, check out Simco's. I was there about a year back, I still like the hot dogs.

Is it a hot dog stand or a store with great hot dogs?
