I agree with spense but the Kennedy's and other polititians often pronounce it Cope-ly. I don't know why.

It's definitely "cop" as in police person and "Lee" as in the name. At least that's how people pronounce it today.

Because I can't stand letting this get away so easily.. though the "Square" is almost universally pronounced with a "short O", it is my understanding that the artist, John Singleton Copley, for whom the square was named, pronounced his name with a "long O" as in "cope".

In this, I can only relate what I have been told... I never met Copley, as he died some months before my birth.
