Which North End Restaurant?

We are staying overnight in Boston on Monday and want to select a North End restaurant just plain has good food, atmosphere, etc. I'd prefer to avoid an extremely expensive place. So far, I've narrowed it down to:

Carmen, Ristorante Fiore, and Giacomos

Does anyone have recommendations on the above three or even a new one we could consider?

We'd like to be able to easily find our way to Mike's Pastries after. Thanks!

Giacomos has good food but absolutely no atmosphere. Like eating in someone's kitchen. Much prefer La Summa - good food, although a little more expensive, but a nice atmosphere too, nothing fancy.

I agree with Alan.

Carmen is nice, a little small. The owner is the chef. It is in a nice location, right next to Paul Revere's House.

Finding Mike's is a no brainer from anywhere in the North End. Look for the long line on Hanover.

Mikes is nice but poke your head in Modern, also on Hanover.

Bova Bakery is Salem Street and is open 24 hours.

I also agree with Alan La Summa is one of the best in the North End.

My personal favorite is Monica's - there's the more upscale restaurant, and then the less pricey Monica's Trattoria - both great options. Have never had a bad meal or service, and always take visitors there when they're in town for a taste of the North End.

Thank you for your suggestions. I'm calling La Summa now and will be looking into a second trip to Monicas - I'm so excited! I'll also take a look into those other bakeries suggested. Thanks so much!

Yes, La Summa is a good call.

Carmen and Giacomo are also good. Fiore is not!

Mike's, in my humble opinion, is grossly overrated. The bakery on Salem St is much more real, with a great selection. Mike's always has a ton of tourists lined out the door, not locals, just tourists.

I'm a local and frequent Mike's, so don't generalize. Yes, there are crowds, but they move very quickly, I'm always in and out in about 10 minutes. Of course it's touristy, the store is right smack in the middle of everything! That does not make it inferior.

Didn't mean to imply it is inferior, just not the only option and you get more bakery "atmosphere" (ha-ha) when you're not all lined up.
