Most of the libraries will have free internet. If you are staying in downtown, Boston Public Library on Copley Square has free internet connection for patrons, and they also used to offer free "visitors" passes in the past.

You can also check one of the cafe's below:

Coffee chains - Starbucks which is everywhere in Boston.

Book stores - Borders in Downtown Crossing is one example. In fact, they have an upstairs location where people are working/studing or surfing the net.

Apple Store - on Boylston Stree - has free Wifii - more so to test out their new iPhones, but you can walk in and connect with your phone. : )

Also, stores/cafes that have wifi will often advertise that they do with a sign outside. With all the universities around and the businesses that cater to that and young professionals, free wifii is everywhere! In fact, if you are coming with a smart phone you may want to double check your settings/ensure some are off so that you don't incur costly interational roaming charges when you step out of the airplane.

Borders Books on Boylston St. by Clarendon St., just off of Copley Square. Barnes & Noble in the Prudential indoor shopping mall. Definitely inside the Boston Public Library on Boylston between Dartmouth and Exeter. Don't know how strong their signal is, or if it reaches outside.
