1 Day tip with a 3 and 1.5 year old

What should we do? We will be in Boston for 1 day in the middle of July, en route to Greenville Maine. We will leave NJ early Friday morning and it takes about 6 hours. We will be picking up someone at the airport the next day. What do you suggest for a half day with 2 small kids.

My first thought is the Children's Museum - you might also enjoy taking them to the Public Garden and seeing the duck sculptures from "Make Way for Ducklings" and then riding the Swan Boats

The kids will LOVE the Children's Museum, and Friday happens to be the one day when it is open late -- till 9 PM. (And if you go after 5 PM on Friday, admission is only $1.) The Aquarium is also a good bet -- the younger child probably won't appreciate it as much, but may still like seeing the penguins.

If it's a nice day, you might prefer to stay outdoors and stretch your legs a bit after the long drive from New Jersey. Depending on where you are staying, you could very easily walk from the Public Garden (swan boat rides) down to Newbury Street for some shopping and ice cream cones, and/or from Boston Common (children's playground and Frog Pond) over to Quincy Market and onward to the North End. Along the way there are lots of great places to stop for lunch and dinner.

Another vote for Public Garden. Kids would love riding Swan Boats and watching real ducks and swans. Children's Museum is a nice option if it is raining, but it can get VERY crowded on Friday nights.

Another option is to walk all the way to Copley Square and visit Boston Public Library. The library has great childrens room where kids can take a break from all the walking.

Just an idea...

I agree with the comments above. You could also walk a very short distance from the Public Garden/ Swan Boats up into the Boston Common and go to the playground and "Frog Pond" there. This is about a 2 block walk. Frog Pond is a happy sight in the summer, as it is a very shallow pool and usually there is a fountain of water going and kids can splash in the water -- NOT a swimming pool. It would be really nice on a warm day. The playground is close by and continues with the "frog" theme -- look for sculptures of playful frogs but human size. There are carts selling cold drinks and sometimes simple food, at the major entrances to the Common. Often there is a ice cream truck at the corner of the Public Garden nearest to Arlington and Boylston streets.
