What to do in Boston if you only have 1 day

My husband and I are travelling to Portland Me on vacation May 9-14 and are considering taking the train down to Boston for a day trip. (Particularly since we have a coupon to pay for one adult round trip ticket & get one free).

Since we've never been to Boston, I am wondering what we would be able to see & do in just 1 day - what are the most important things?

Also, how easy is it to get around on public transit in Boston?

Take a trolley or walking tour that includes the Freedom Trail Downtown. It's easy to walk or take the T anywhere Downtown.

Yes, a trolley tout (hop on/hop off) will give you a good overview. A Duck Tour would give you a good overview, too. It is very easy to get around Boston by subway and on foot.

Amtrak's Downeaster train from Portland will bring you into North Station, which connects to the subway (green & orange lines) and is within walking distance of some of the main historic sites. You can also get the trolley tour right from North Station.

After getting off the train at North Station walk over to Charlestown. Take a free tour of the USS Constitution then visit the free USS Constitution Museum from here either walk to the Bunker Hill Monument and climb the stairs and visit the free museum across the street from the Bunker Hill Monument or walk over to the Inner Harbor ferry and take the ferry to Long Wharf. From Long Wharf you have many options including picking up a trolley tour, walking to Quincy Market/ Faneuil Hall, walk the rest of the Freedom Trail, have lunch at the North End or a visit to the New England Aquarium. You can also take the subway to Copley and take a Boston Duck Tour.

Enjoy!

Not much to add the previous excellent posts, but I will mention that the Boston Duck Tours offer a shorter tour - 55 minutes rather than 80 minutes - that leaves from near the New England Aquarium.

The shorter Duck Tour that leaves near the Aquarium does not include the dip in the Charles River, which I view as their main differentiator.
