Getting to South Station

SO excited as we are leaving for Boston next week!

We are staying at the Radisson in Theatre District and are catching the Acela Express out of South Station at 11:10am on Saturday Jan. 29th for New York.

How do we get to South Station and how soon do we need to leave hotel to get there in plenty of time to print ticket and board. Amtrak recommends getting there 30 minutes in advance. I want to have an idea of travel time from hotel to South Station. Are Acela seats assigned??

Hi osparki

it is less than a mile from the Radisson to South Station, so 15-20 minute walk. To print your tickets at the kiosk only takes a few minutes. Amtrak will not announce what platform the train is departing from until about 10-15 minutes before departure time.

seats are not assigned, just hop on and find a seat in the train class that you have selected (ie there is a first class car on Acela)

If you left your hotel at 10:20 ish and you knew what direction South Station is : ) that should give you enough time.

you can always buy a coffee, snack or magazine if you are there too early.

Or you can take a cab or take the orange subway line inbound to Downtown Crossing and then get the redline to South STation.

You also have the option of getting on at Back Bay Station, which is a little closer to your hotel. However, South Station still makes the most sense because you'd get first choice of seats.

It's definitely walkable. 30 minutes before your train time is about right, but I'd do 45 if you want time to get coffee, buy magazines, etc and not be rushed.

If you don't want to walk with luggage taking a cab would be a good idea. The subway is an option, but probably wouldn't be more convenient than walking because you'd have to walk up to Park St. station for the Red Line or get on closer to the hotel and than switch to Red Line.

Probably best to just go ahead and hop in a cab outside the Radisson. It's not even a mile to South Station, so a 3 or 4 minute cab ride. I'll guess a fare of $8, maybe even less.
