First US trip - Advice needed

Hiyas,

We'll be travelling to New York over the Xmas period until the 27th. From there we planned on visiting Boston for 3/4 days but herein lies our dilemma about what we should do next.

We plan on heading down to New Orleans around the 2nd (as it's a little pricier over New Years).

Do you suggest we stay extra nights in Boston or visit some other place on the way to New Orleans?

We're not late night party people who need to be anywhere special for New Years.

Is visiting Washington or another location for a few days feasible?

Thanks for any advice.

Boston is a great place for New Years Eve - and you don't need to be great party-goers. We have an all day event called First Night, culminating with fireworks over the harbor at midnight. Very festive, with lots of music and ice sculptures, etc. But of course, visiting Washingtron for a few days is also quite doable.

That is not a great time of year for travel/sightseeing as it can rain, snow, sleet, or actually just be cold and sunny. I don't think it is worth the packing/unpacking and travel day lost to go to DC. So, unless you wanted to add a day somewhere and visit a southern city like Miami, I would suggest staying put in Boston or heading to your next destination even if it is a few more dollars. certainly would be less than adding a whole other leg to the trip.

If the weather is being nice, first night can be great in Boston. If the weather is cold and wet, you will quickly wish you were picked a warmer place.

Washington for a few days is feasible.

I assume you are driving? Not knowing your interests, it's difficult to know what to suggest, but you would drive through Chattanooga, TN which has a great aquarium. You might check the mountain areas near Asheville, NC if you prefer skiing. Or head to the beach somewhere between Panama City, FL and New Orleans if you want to get some swimming in. Boston and DC are also great choices, but like the other posters said, the weather could be miserable.

I was wondering, too, which way you plan to travel - driving or plane or train? That may sway my vote as well as the weather conditions which you will unfortunately not know until you get here.
