Suggestions please

I'm not even sure where to start. We are staying in Dennis and meeting friends in Boston the last Thursday of this month (a week from today in fact) in the late afternoon. Am picking one up at Logan and the other in Brookline then we will go out ...somewhere.... to dinner before dropping them back in Brookline and traveling back to Cape Cod. We do this annually usually right in Brookline but one year on the North End. That year we went to a wonderful Italian Restaurant that was recommended on this board but thought they were joking when they said that they did not serve dessert and they needed to turn the table over.

We would like to spend time together in a place that doesn't mind if we linger. Visiting is our top priority so we don't need a pricy place and distractions though I appreciate nice dining and well prepared and presented options. I just want to stay away from Asia/Indian food otherwise all other options are fine. Should we find a place in Brookline (recommendations pls) or some other neighborhood or Boston proper?

So, I know this is very general but can you help me anyway? Hope so. Thank you for your thoughts.

I like La Morra in Brookline and I've definitely lingered with friends over our dinners there. http://www.lamorra.com/

It's right on Rt. 9 near Brookline Village.

Next to the Legal Seafood in Chestnut Hill is the Cottage. It has good, fresh American food. http://www.cottagechestnuthill.com/

I like the Fireplace on Beacon St. in Brookline but I find it a bit overpriced. http://www.fireplacerest.com/home/

Also in Chestnut Hill you have Aquitaine Bis (French) and in Coolidge Corner there is Lineage and a little further down Harvard St., Cognac Bistro (which may work for you).

Sol Azteca (Beacon Street, Brookline)

Trattoria Toscana (Jersey Street, Fenway)

Eastern Standard (Commonwealth Avenue, Kenmore Square)

I, too, would suggest The Fireplace. Ting is probably quite right about the prices, but I don't go very often so i don't mind so much. However, the food is good and the room is quiet enough to enjoy conversation.
