Girls Trip

Hello everyone! We're a group of seven 28 year olds traveling to Boston from Philly in a few weeks! We arrive on a Friday and leave on a Monday. The sox aren't in town the wknd we are there so a baseball game is out :( Any tips or ideas on where to go - esp. for shopping, day-drinking, dinners, or nights out would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds like a great time!

One of the great things about Boston is that it's compact and walkable. For shopping and day-drinking, two good destinations would be Faneuil Hall/Quincy market and Back Bay.

Back Bay is a larger neighborhood with lots of high end boutiques and galleries along with some more moderate places. It's a charming neighborhood with outdoor cafes, a range of restaurants (including high end) and some lively bars.

Quincy market is more of a major party place, with plenty of good shopping in a condensed area. Also very historic, but very different from Back Bay. A bit touristy, but you'll probably have fun.

I'd do Quincy Market near the beginning of your trip, and do Back Bay when you've calmed down a bit and are into something a bit more refined.

During one night of your trip, hop on the T and go to Harvard Square. Good bar hopping, street performers and people watching.

Go to the North End for some serious eats (Boston's Little Italy).

Day drinking: Tia's at the long wharf Mariott.

Hit the seaport area. Sam's, Strega, whiskey priest, any of the places at liberty wharf. The seaport hotel's tamo bar is nice.

Are you driving? If so, you could drive to Wrentham for a day of outlet shopping if that appeals to you. The outlet mall there is huge.

If you don't have a car, I wouldn't consider it though. Too much of a hassle getting there and back.

Good advice. I second Harvard Square. Would strongly suggest you spend one of your evenings there, or maybe late afternoon. There are some very pretty outdoor cafes, although it may not appear that way at first. Since you are a large group, here is a good place for you to have a better chance at seating: head to the Charles Hotel. It is only 1 1/2 blocks from the middle of Harvard Square. It has a large outdoor Legal Seafoods on the plaza in front of the hotel. But wait, don't say yes yet! Go up the stairs you will see there towards the courtyard behind the hotel. The courtyard has 3 outdoor cafes! One is another Legal Seafoods. This is really pleasant on a nice summer night. Another option for you is the beer garden at Charlie's Kitchen (ask anyone).

You might also enjoy going to the Seaport area of Boston, which you can do on the MBTA (it's on the Silver Line). There are now lots of restaurants there, some directly on the harborfront. There are usually all sorts of activities in that area and the views are great. Have a great time!

Since you seem disappointed you won't be able to see a Sox game while you're in town, I think you might enjoy a tour of Fenway Park. Definitely head to the North End if you like Italian food (save room for dessert from Mike's Pastry). If you drive, leave your car parked at the hotel and use the T. Boston is smaller than Philly and easy to navigate on foot/by T. Have fun!
