Family trip - Boston and Other (beach?) recommendations

Hello! We are planning a roadtrip to Boston late August with our 5yr old and 8yr old boys. Have researched with recommended tourist attractions like Children's Museum, Double Deck hop-on-off, etc. Can anyone give anymore suggestions and also for day or short trips nearby Boston? Have heard a lot about Cape Cod beaches/ Martha's Vineyard..is it better to do a day trip or spend a couple of days at the beach in Cape Cod/ other? thanks!

Depends on how important being at the beach is for you. Also depends on how much time you have here. How long are you planning to stay?

How long are you planning to stay in Boston? A day trip to Cape Cod is hardly worth doing in my opinion but others may think differently. Are you planning to stop anywhere on the way to Boston and on the way back?

Coming from Toronto which has plenty of similar activities as Boston for children, I wonder if your boys would enjoy more of a beach holiday. If so perhaps a couple of days in Boston and the rest on the Cape would be a better idea.

Take a look at the Cape Cod forum, the column to the right of the page on that forum will give you lots of information. Will be glad to help with any further questions.

Boston Duck Tours are a great way to get a cursory look at our fine city and some of its history. http://www.bostonducktours.com/

You might also enjoy a day trip into Salem, MA. Putnam Pantry is always a good time for ice cream overload.

A day trip to Old Sturbridge Village in MA would be fun and very educational too. http://www.osv.org/

There is plenty of shoreline to hit the beach in many other spots besides Cape Cod. You might really enjoy ocean views and/or beach in a number of other spots from Ipswich to Gloucester to Marshfield. You might wish to look online for information about the beaches in those towns and what the parking situation would be when you get to them. In some cases, you might need a "beach sticker" (usually for residents only) to park closest to the beach, with parking for out-of-towners leaving you to walk a little bit farther.

I'm not a big fan of the Cape. It has some great stuff, but I believe that there are plenty of other great things spread across the Bay State for you to enjoy too. Going to the Cape, to me, in the summer - I try to avoid that. There's just waaay too much traffic. Obviously, there is lots of traffic because tons of people like going there.

Whatever you decide, I am sure that you'll have a great time. Massachusetts is a great, great state.

If you have enough time, and are interested in beach time, a few days on the Cape would work well. You don't have to rush around and see everything, but find a good area to stay and enjoy the beach and food.

You can take a look at the Cape Cod forum "top question" section for guidance.

In terms of stops along the way, your kids may enjoy the Strong Museum in Rochester, NY or the water park near Lake George. Another nice place to stop is the Berkshires region of Mass. -- lots of pleasant town centers and the Norman Rockwell museum in Stockbridge.

If you don't want to go all the way down to the cape, you could hit up beaches just north of Boston like in Gloucester.

You could always take a day trip to Canobie Lake Park in New Hampshire if you like amusement parks.

As for a day trip to Cape Cod, it is a long way to go to go to the beach. Plymouth is a nice town to check out and has nice beaches.
