Best Authentic Clam Shack

Looking for an authentic clam shack in the Boston area. We are driving up from Foxwoods Casino via Quincy & into Boston. So anything along the way would be perfect. We are keen to try fried clams, lobster roll and clam chowder and would ideally like the place to look like an authentic clam shack.

Have we been having trouble with phony clam shacks? Sorry, just kidding. But really, the concept of a "<seafood_of_your_choice> shack" is pretty loosely defined, so I don't think there's a very good answer to your question other than that the management wants to feature a particular type of seafood. To be honest, I'm not sure I've seen anything calling itself either a crab shack or a lobster shack around here. Crabs are more of a Mid-Atlantic or southern item, and lobsters tend to hang out in "pounds" or "pools."

Anyway, you might want to have a look here: boston.com/travel/…

In Quincy along Wollaston Beach there are two places very close to each other plus they offer a great view, both are good.

Tony's Clam Shop

The Clam Box

(has beer and wine, Tony's doesn't )

They may not be the typical Maine or Cape Cod clam shacks or lobster pots but you can try Tony's or the Clam Box on Quincy Shore Drive on Wollaston Beach in Quincy. I think that are very similar though Tony's may have a slight edge over the Clam Box.

I went a few weeks ago to the Hingham Lobster Pound on my way back from Plymouth, and had fantastic fried scallops and a fish sandwich. They have steamed and uncooked lobsters too. It's about 6 miles from Quincy on Route 3A, in a less congested area than Wollaston Beach.

These are north of the city, so maybe aren't convenient for you:

Woodmans in Essex (claims to have invented the fried clam)

Farnham's in Essex

The Clam Box in Ipswich
