Is it true?

Is it true that happy hours are illegal in Boston?

If so, where would you recommend some budget minded people go for cheap drinks and food?

No Happy Hours in MA. No drink specials are allowed at any bars.

State law does not allow alcoholic beverages to be discounted. Some places do offer discounted FOOD to be able to offer something akin to a happy hour. Of these I think my favorite is Grendel's Den in Harvard Square.

A lot of casual bar/restaurants offer reduced prices on appetizers at Happy Hour. So you pay for your drinks but you can eat pretty well for a low price.

You should look for happy hour specials in the area where you'll be--just search online.

Many places still advertise "happy hour" but they are not as happy as they used to be.

Yeah, it's true, but liquor prices do vary from place to place.

Also, Ting mentioned appetizer specials -- some places even offer free nibbles during what we in Massachusetts call Happy Hour. Just the drink prices cannot change.
