Boston in January???

Hello,

I am thinking of a 4 day trip mid-Jan. and am wondering if this is a good time to visit Boston. How cold is it? Is there much going on at this time if year? I guess it's always a good time to shop and eat.

Thanks.

It's always a good time to visit. That said, it was 6 degrees here yesterday. A balmy 30 degrees today. But next week is supposed to be high 40s/low 50s, so the weather here is very unpredictable.

Much of what going on? There are concerts, museums, theater, sports, shopping, dining, bars, sights to see, historic landmarks, college kids, etc.

It's the coldest and snowiest part of the year. If you have other options, you should avail yourself of them. There aren't any outdoor or harbor activities, but other than that everything runs normally.

What do you want to be going on? Prof basketball, college hockey, historical sites (a few with reduced hours), museums, pubs, restaurants, etc etc. check theweatherchannel.com for a look at historical weather but remember things aren't the same each year

Boston's art scene is in full swing this time of year. BSO, plays, galleries, etc. Winter is when the cultural stuff happens.

From a purely aesthetic point of view, January is NOT Boston's time to shine. Spring when the Magnolias and Dogwoods are in bloom, the Summer when you can be out on the harbor on a boat...the fall when the trees are in color...those are prettier times to visit.

However, if you don't mind cold weather and possibly snow, January is relatively inexpensive to visit. You can get the best hotel values, and the city is alive with events and concerts and shows, etc. Museums are always open, although some of the other touristy things like the Swan Boats and Duck Tours don't operate in January. It's really up to you what you want to do.

I'd suggest you visit when the weather is better. Boston is a walking city and I think it'd be much more pleasant to do so when it's not so cold.
