four days outside of Boston

I have four days to send after touring Boston. I would like suggestions for this time. My husband and I enjoy hiking and beautiful scenery and historical sights. We are from California and I have never been to the East Coast.

When are you coming? What kind of beautiful scenery are we talking about? You'll have a car, I presume.

If late spring, summer or fall I suggest the White Mountains of New Hampshire

If you like historical sights, and have the time, you might consider a day trip down Route 3 to Plymouth to see the Mayflower II and Plimouth Plantation. Also a bit north to Salem. Besides the witches there is the National Park Service Salem Maritime.

If you want to go on a hike not too far out of Boston, I'd suggest the Blue Hills.

Consider Vermont, if you will have a car. Very scenic country, hiking options, nice inns.

Here's a great trip report with details: tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g28942-i47-k402172…

First places that came to my mind was Ogunquit, and Portland, Maine or the White Mountains.

Maine is a great place for a mix of mountains and lakes all near the coast for ocean views and access. I love the south coast beaches with Ogunquit bordering on the private Moody Beach as the best, but mid-coast isn't too far and the Camden area has nice hikes. You cannot beat the seafood in Maine, and there's the opportunity to try ocean kayaking, surfing and boogie boarding. There are also schooner and fishing charters. if you are inthe Freeport area consider taking advantage of their inexpensive Outdoor School classes offered by LL Bean, and a trip to the store is pretty fun even for a non-shopper like me.

The White Mountains is a close second and has lakes and rivers, but there's no ocean beach of course.
