New Orleans to Boston, good city/ town to visit in between?

Hi, I am in New Orleans now and have about 9 days to get to Boston, I can either fly or hire a car to get there and wanting to know if there are some great and interesting places to stop at along the way. If I fly I would be happy to stop off at one destination along the way if it is an interesting and great city/town but if I drive I can stop at as many good spots as there are to see, time permitting. Hope a few road enthusiasts may have some helpful advice. We are 55 and 60 Australians enjoy exploring different areas of US, enjoy good food, fabulous scenery, cute and interesting towns.

You may want to post on TA's Road Trips Forum (but in the meantime, I'll add Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to the list):

Have you looked into the cost of a one way car rental? The drop-off fees could be hefty.

One suggestion would be to just fly to Boston early, then rent a car and explore New England for a week or so. Coastal Maine, inland mountains and villages, or head to Cape Cod and the Islands. Return the car to Boston when you are done.

By the most direct route, driving between Boston and NOLA takes about 26 hours of actual road time...or a bit less than 3 hours per day on a 9 day trip.

Not much to see in Mississippi toward Birmingham. Bham has its Civil Rights Museum, Sloss Furnaces and the Barber Motor Sports Museum.

Mentone and/or Little River might be worth a stop toward Chattanooga. Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga as well as the Chickamauga Battlefield might be interesting if US Civil War history strikes a note.

Maybe a detour toward the Ocoee River and some rafting after Chattanooga?

Not much in Knoxville...maybe Dollywood for some Southern kitsch?

The Shenandoah Valley is pretty and any number of side bars might be worth it.

The Antietam Battlefield is not too far off the road in Maryland toward Pennsylvania - again US Civil War

Perhaps Hershey PA is worth a stop?

NYC is always open!

Mystic in Connecticut is nice. So is the Submarine Force Museum in Groton.

Newport is a detour in RI.

Perhaps Fall River and the USS Massachusetts is of interest?

Of course, if you are willing to take a longer route, Savannah, Charleston, the Smokeys, Charlottesville, DC, Baltimore, Amish Country, Princeton/Trenton Revolutionary War sites, etc., all might work. With maybe a route through the Berkshires and along the Hudson opening up other sights.

What interests you?

Thank you all for your wonderful suggestions. We are now thinking of flying straight to Boston and hiring a car and doing a road trip from there maybe north. Looking forward to it and thanks for all of the input by all.
