The good news is that Boston hotels are usually lower priced in January, but it will vary a bit by exact date.

3 star isn't really a $ budget, and most centrally located Boston hotels are >3*. There may be some that fall within your budget though, because it generally a low demand time.

Take a look at the forum's Top Questions section for neighborhoods to stay. Boston is compact. If your budget is super low, forum members can come up with suggestions. Include exact dates (prices fluctuate).

Will you have a car? Keep in mind that centrally located hotels don't provide free parking. You'll need to budget for parking your car if you are stuck with one.

Boston is compact. You can stay in any downtown neighborhoods and get around easily be foot and subway. That said you might want to consider one of these Back Bay Hotels -- Sheraton Boston, Marriott Copley Place, Westin Copley Place, only because they all are connected to one of two big indoor malls (Prudential Center and Copley Place) that connect to each other and also have a subway stop (Prudential.)The weather could be pretty cold and nasty at that time of the year and you might like the option of having all the inside space right outside your hotel.
