Bagel Shops in the city of Boston

I'll be traveling to Boston with my dad in about a week and I'm wondering if anyone can suggest good bagel places to go. Specifically places that are in the heart of Boston as that is where we will be staying and spending time. Also specifically if they are shops other than national chains.

Thank you so much for you advice in advance!

Finagle a Bagel is a chain but there's nothing wrong with that.

Breugger's is also a chain with a good reputation. Then there is Kupel's in Brookline and Katz's in Chelsea.

Kupel's is easily reached by subway.

Finagle a Bagel is the best!!! It has a sharp cutter that literally shoots the bagel across the entire food line. Fantastic presentation and great cups of joe! Not sure of the locations but know there's one near Boston Common and in Cambridge for the smart kids to indulge in.

Katz's in Chelsea and Rosenfeld's in Newton Centre are two of the best, but they are not downtown. You can try some independent coffee shops like The Thinking Cup on Tremont near the Boston Common or the Wired Puppy on Newbury St. Also the Milk St. Cafe on Milk St.

You'll find bagels offered most everywhere in Boston, where coffee and breakfast pastries are found.

Lots of places serve big, fluffy, donut-shaped bread that they call bagels, but a "real" bagel needs to be boiled and then baked so it is dense, a bit crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside. You will find those at Breugger's, Kupel's, Rosenfeld's, Katz's and Finagle and maybe a few other places.

Finagel's are like giant hamburger buns. Not really a true bagel, though the saw-thing is cool. For authentic, you go to Brookline or Newton, but downtown I find Bruegger's fine.
