You'd most likely be able to see a Red Sox game unless they're playing away from home while you're here. The schedule won't be out for a while. The season just ended.

The Red Sox are playing at Fenway Aug 22-24 so you're in luck there. Some tickets are released in December but in the past it's been only single game tickets for April/May and multi-game tickets I believe. Give it a couple weeks and then try calling the Red Sox ticket office again, they're still getting everything settled from the World Series. Worst case if you don't get tix until you get here, you can get them from a ticket re-seller but will pay a higher price.

There's a chance the Patriots (NFL/ American football) will have a pre-season game that weekend, but that schedule is not released until next April and tickets sometime after that. They play in Gillette Stadium, about 30 miles outside of Boston. Much tougher to get to/from compared to Fenway but there is a train to the stadium on gamedays and many posts on here about getting to the stadium. www.Patriots.com for info on them.

Although not the same level as the big four sports in the US, there is also MLS soccer. The New England Revolution are the local team. They also play at Gillette Stadium but there is no train to the stadium on their gamedays. Schedule released in January, easy to get tickets to even day of game.

Sign up on the Red Sox website so you will be in the loop regarding ticket sales. Typically some tickets are sold in December, more in January, and then more as we are into the season. Unlike the year prior, interest will be high due to the World Series winners status. If you are unable to score tickets through their website, there are plenty of reselling opportunities at a premium price through Stubhub and Ace Tickets. You can also try to buy tickets the day of the game, as they release a couple hundred for each game. Lastly, if you have no luck, I highly recommend taking a tour of Fenway Park.

Red sox tickets weren't hard to come by this past season. Even when it was obvious they were going to make the playoffs, there were empty seats.

With their recent success it's best to order in advance. But unless they're playing the Yankees, there's still a good chance that in august there'll be tix available on game day.

Here is a link to their schedule. 1 item to note is no game times are posted yet - they will be added around February or so. For future reference, schedules are released in September for the following season.

With it being the Mariners, you may be able to get tickets the day of the game but I would check redsox.com or stubhub ahead of time. Just do some research on what tickets you want to buy (generally avoid the Right Field Corner or Upper Bleachers)

When you go make sure you bring more cash then you would at a sporting event in the UK. The prices from Fenway Sports Group stadium in Liverpool and Boston is night and day difference. The experience is worth it at Fenway even if you have to get tickets from a scalper (tout).

Also get to the game early to enjoy the atmosphere around the stadium.

As mentioned, select tickets will go on sale before Christmas (beginning and end of season games) and summer games are announced in Jan/February. It was pretty easy to get tickets this year, and actually easier to get tickets to Game 1 of the ALDS than regular season games in past seasons, so it will be interesting to see what ticket sales will be like next year. I would imagine if you buy directly on their website within the first week of ticket sales, you'll get something. You can also try Ace Tickets or Stub Hub for tickets to a game, if you don't want to buy them in the winter and they are unavailable from the Red Sox site in the summer. Sign up for the Red Sox newsletter or follow them on social media to get the updates.

Usually the Patriots play the Giants at the last pre-season game at home, so you may be able to catch a pre-season football game if you want to drive or take a bus 30 minutes south of Boston. The soccer team, New England Revolution also plays at the same stadium but I don't know much about that schedule or catching a game.
