Staying in Boston but would like a trip or two outside of it

We're travelling to Boston from Ireland next June/July and would are going to stay in the city. But we would also like to hire a car and venture outside the city for a weekend or mid week breaks. Can you recommend anywhere that would be worth seeing?

Thanks.

There are SO many places a gas tank away from Boston.

Newport, Rhode Island is one of my favorites.

Do you want to go to the beach, go sightseeing, hiking, etc.?

Sightseeing and/or beach would be good. We're not ones for lying on a beach all day but love exploring new places.

We're in our late 30's/early 40's if thats any use.

My vote goes to Portsmouth, NH. Great sightseeing, restaurants, shops, history and the beach is right there. Plus, if you want to do a bit of shopping, the outlets in Kittery, Maine are in the next town to the north.

Old Sturbridge Village

Plimoth Plantation

Both are hectares in size, populated with people dressed authentically, doing, speaking and explaining as people did back in their day.

Plimouth Pilgrim to child: "What hast thou?" "A balloon." "Prithee tell, what is this ... bal-loon?"

Grat thanks. I'll check these out. New Hampshire looks lovely so will go there. Is there places we should stay in for longer than others? We have about 5 days to play around with?

Jenny,

With 5 days to play with, I'd definitely plan at least 2 nights in the White Mtns of NH. The other top gem might be Acadia Nat'l Park in Maine. It's a bit up the coast so would involve some driving.

day1, pick up car, drive to White Mtns. Stay in Jackson or if mid-week maybe North Conway.

day 2, all day around Mtns

day 3, depart Mtns, drive to Acadia, stay in Bar Harbor.

day 4, all day Acadia

day 5, long drive back to Boston.

Now, you couldn't go wrong spending the entire 5 days in either Acadia or the White Mtns.

On the drive between Acadia and Boston, Portland, Portsmouth and Newburyport are all great little cities and all on the coast. Salem MA is another option, as are Gloucester and Rockport. BTW, you can reach all of these cities by train or bus, so that's another option w/out renting a car.

Kevin
