Walking from South Station to Logan airport.

Hi guys,

Is the way plotted by Google Maps for a walk from Boston South station to the Logan airport in fact walkable? It is a mere 3 miles and I prefer to walk if it is safe/legal to do so.

Regards,

Dmitry

Unless you can walk on water, I don't think so, no. Take the Silver Line from South Station to Logan.

If you look at those directions on google maps carefully you'll see that the route they suggest includes taking a ferry.

Walking through the tunnels is not allowed. And, even from the n'hoods on the same side of the harbor I think you would raise suspicion if you tried to walk in. All roads at the airport are busy during most of the hours it is open.

Even employees who "walk to work" at the airport go to the subway station and pick up the free airport bus to the terminals or other work areas

If you are in the mood for a walk you can walk over to the seaport district and take the silver line to logan. The walk over is nice via summer then cut over thru the world trade center/seaport hotel.

You can take a water taxi, which offers great views of city, a regular taxi, or the cheapest and probably the easiest way from South Station to the Airport would be the MBTA 's Silver-line.

Downtown Boston is very walkable, unfortunately the only place that is not walkable is from the city to the airport since the Boston Harbor is in between the two, but both sides of the harbor offer very nice walks via the Boston Harbor Walk. http://www.bostonharborwalk.com/placestogo/

On the airport side, you can walk thru an urban Harbor Art area at the 'shipyard gallery'.

My favorite walk near South Station, in the Seaport area, is between the ICA in the Seaport to the North End via Fan Pier & Rowes Wharf.  http://www.bostonharborwalk.com/placestogo/location.php?nid=6&sid=33.

Of course, the most popular and recommended walk in the city is The Freedom Trail and a must walk for a first time visitor. http://www.thefreedomtrail.org/

Other walks include-

The Rose Kennedy Greenway

Walking along  Commonwealth  Mall Ave cityofboston.gov/parks/emerald/Comm_Mall.asp

The Charles River Esplanade,  http://www.esplanadeassociation.org/

The Arnold Arboretum http://www.arboretum.harvard.edu/

and other walks along the Emerald Necklace.

No walking. Fastest is a cab. Silver Line is a maddening 20 or so mins, but it's cheap and reliable.
