I shall be in Boston for a day with wife and two kids aged 8 and 14, arriving early on a Monday afternoon in first week of October and departing next day evening after availing Grayline's Fall Foliage Spectacular Tour. The Coach tour is a full day tour and is scheduled to finish at 6 PM and we wish to take a bus to New York soon thereafter. Grayline has confirmed that their driver can drop us at South Station from where all buses depart.
Though schedules for all operators are yet to open, it is likely that being Tuesday, Megabus and Boltbus shall both have last departure at 6.30 pm, Peter Pan and Greyhound shall both have last departures at 7 PM. Lucky Star is likely to have last departure at 8 PM (I am excluding 10 PM departures, being too late)
My first choice is Megabus at 6.30 PM, which if booked well in advance should enable $3 tickets + $7 for the front seats of the upper deck, which look very tempting. As per their website they shall refuse passengers arriving beyond 5 minutes prior to scheduled departure time.
Next choice is Peter Pan/Greyhound at 7 PM, which shall be more expensive at $25-$30 each.
And then there is Lucky Star at 8 PM at $20
It might probably be more prudent to book for the 7 PM bus, but I am tempted to proceed for megabus because of their reserved seats and also low fares.
I am not aware of practicalities, so suggestions, if any, are requested. Also if I happen to miss the 6.30 PM bus what chances should I look at for getting space on the 7 PM bus of Peter Pan/Greyhound or 8 PM bus of Lucky Star as walk in passengers. (It shall be too expensive to purchase backup tickets on the 7 PM or 8 PM buses.)
Thanks a lot in advance.
