3-5 days. Location/hotel? VRBO or HomeAway?

Looking to do a balance of historical tourism and basic relaxing/exploring.

Any general area of the city that's best to stay in? Easy to access trains?

Any basic hotel suggestions? I just need a basic hotel room to sleep in. Not 4 stars.

Is it worth looking into VRBO or HomeAway?

I will read the archives for itinerary ideas, as I'm sure it's been asked 1000 times.

What general area should I target?

Which areas should be avoided since they're too far removed?

Beacon Hill seems to be the core.

Copley Square? Yes/No?

Theater District? Yes/No?

West End? Yes/No?

Fanueil Hall/North End? Yes/No?

I think I will try for anything from Copley or closer. Seems like a plan?

I looked on Google maps and see that Copley to Boston core is 2 miles (40 min walk)

15 min. subway on the Green.

don't bother with vrbo, etc for less than a week.

check out the lodging pages where you can filter by price.

Most anywhere downtown is convenient to T. Default answer is always back bay

but there are other areas that are perfectly fine.

Max budget per night; # people/beds needed; dates?

Any of the locations you mentioned are fine.

I'm thinking of Amtrak NY to Back Bay in 3 hours.

No car to park is a positive, correct?

This is a good move, right?

I also want to hit up a basic Salem tour.

60 min train ride on the purple line.

That takes care of 1 day trip...

2 adults, no kids.

I don't have a set budget, but prefer not to waste money on fancy hotels.

Just need something basic and clean. Location trumps all.

I'm guessing $200-$250 a night.

Why avoid VRBO if only 2-3 days ?

Hmm, it doesn't seem much discounted vs. a hotel.

$200 ballpark, either way.

OK, more progress.

I found a VRBO studio apt. in Back Bay near Prudential Station for under $200/night.

This is a good price & location, right?

Realistically, I am going to do Freedom Trail for 2 days, Salem for 1, and 1 day for misc.

Should I stay in the Back Bay area that is 40 mins walk (15, min subway) from downtown, or should I just get a hotel in dead center downtown? Downtown seems more convenient that having to schlepp on a subway to get back to the hotel each time we need to go back, right?
