Christmas Break in LA, but where else?

My husband and I will be coming to California over Christmas and New Years. We will be spending the first part of our vacation visiting with our daugther and her family in LA. Since she has been living in California for a few years, we have spent time in LA, San Diego, and San Francisco. We are looking to spend some time seeing other parts of California. We are looking for some "down" time - a relaxing atomosphere, but we know Dec./Jan. is not the right time for the beach. For starters, we have been considering Palm Springs, Catalina Island, or Santa Barbara. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Well, the only non-coastal area on your list is the Palm Springs area which includes the whole Coachella Valley. It is a string of towns starting with Palm Springs and including Palm Desert,Rancho Mirage,Indian Wells and La Quinta. They all have hotels, restaurants, shopping, slightly different personalities, hiking ,entertainment ,etc.It is IN season there so definitely make a res.

If you want the ultimate down time, go to Death Valley NP and stay at the Furnace Creek Inn. No broadband, No WiFi. No cell service.

But, it is beautiful, something of a time warp and truly relaxing.
