HELP...family road trip to California. Hotels in San Diego

We are organising a family road trip to California with our 10 and 8 year old in July/Aug and need a bit of help. Our agenda:

San Fran for 3 nights @ Westin St Francis

Monterey for a night @ Portola Plaza

Santa Barbara for a night @ Harbour View Inn

LA for 2 nights at Beverley Hills Hilton

San Diego for 7 nights @ ????

Vegas for 3 nights at the Bellagio

We are looking for a decent (4-5 star) beach hotel either in San Diego or could swap that for Orange County. Looked at Loews Coronado but looked out of the way and the Marriott was not on the beach and only looked ok. Happy to swap for Laguna etc but don't know the area and do like some life in the evenings.

Any help and any holes in the agenda would be most appreciated

Loews in San Diego is nice, but you need to drive everywhere from there. However, the facilities are great and there is a nice pool area, dive in movies, sailing, boogie boarding, tennis, spa, etc.. all on-site. Loews is on the bay, not on the beach, but they offer free golf cart shuttle service to the beach or you can walk it.

Hotel del Coronado is also very nice and is right on the beach.

If you can - switch your Vegas Hotel - the Bellagio is very kid unfriendly, in fact, unless children are guest, they are not even allowed in the lobby of the hotel. You might want to consider Mandalay Bay or the Four Seasons (which is the top floor of Mandalay). It is four star and the pool is wonderful and much more kids friendly.

We bring our kids everywhere including top notch restaurants and they are very well behaved, but we feel uncomfortable at the Bellagio with them.

I did not see Disneyland on the schedule, have you already been and don't want to visit again?

I would decrease your San Diego trip and add 2 nights at the Grand Californian Hotel or Disneyland Hotel and visit DL! 10 and 8 are prime DL ages.

Also, you may want to see Legoland which is north of San Diego in Carlsbad. We spent one night at the Grand Pacific Palisades Hotel right next to Legoland. Great fun and nice dining at Karl Strauss.

I agree with juxie, drop the Bellagio and stay at the Mandalay Bay or even better THEHotel at Mandalay Bay. It has a killer beach and wave pool with other pools as well. Much nicer place for kids than Bellagio.

The Loews is too far. The Marriott is great, but the del Coronado is better.

The Marriott Marina Hotel has a nice pool and would let the adults walk to the Gaslamp area easily. The Hard Rock Hotel might be another option as well.

Really helpful - many thanks for the responses (Tripadvisor is becoming a one stop travel agent!!)

We did the Disney thing in Florida earlier this year so preferably we are looking for a bit of relaxation as we are parked out

If you keep San Diego at seven nights, try searching VRBO for condos on the beach. What a vacation! Have fun.

Yes, definitey try for a beach condo in San Diego if you will be there for a week. More comfortable, more room, ability to eat breakfast in if you wish ( I do ).

A refrigerator for snacks.

If you will have a car, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club in La Jolla shores is right on a very nice beach. You would need to rent a car if you stayed there, but it is a lovely property. My favorite beach resort remains Hotel Del Coronado, it's older, the rooms are smaller, but you can't beat the history or the location. The great thing about Coronado is it's just a quick ferry ride across the bay to all the things to do and see in downtown San Diego - or a quick drive over the Coronado Bay Bridge.

Have a fantastic visit!
