Family vacation - where to stay

My family and I (2 adults and 2 kids ages 5 and 8) are planning a 7-day visit to San Diego in early June. We have never been and have no idea what area of the city we should stay in. We are definitely visiting the zoo and Legoland. We want to stay in a nice, safe part of the city, preferably near the beach if not on it. What areas of the city are best for families with young children (safe, near family-oriented restaurants, near parks)? Also, what hotels or condos are recommended? We'd like to stay in the $200-250/night range. Thank you!

Here is one suggestion. Not on the beach, but near it. On Coronado, across the San Diego Bay.

hi

san diego is great!! loads to do for families you will have a ball!!

we have visited twice - no bad experiences, always felt safe - just take usual precautions

it is a big city so you cant be near everywhere - but the traffic flows freely

if you want the beach id definitely reccommend la jolla (though we havent stayed there and i believe it is quite pricey) whether you stay there or not to pay it a visit - and take lunch on the toplevel of georges at the cove

great food

good prices

wonderful vieews

where we DID spend a couple of nights - and all enjoyed it - was on crystal pier - you still in an immaculate cottage with bedrrom longe kitchen porch etc

you are lierally on the beach and will be wakened to th sound of the waves coming in and slightly swaying the pier

look up crystal pier in a search engine

Loews on Coronado is great with kids - larger rooms, three pools (one kids only, one family and one adults only), tennis, you can rent boats to go sailing), you are on the bay, but they have golf carts that will shuttle you to the beach and they supply chairs, umbrellas, towels & boogie boards at no cost.

Downside is it is on the south side of Coronado so you have to drive everywhere.

The Dana Hotel in Mission Bay (new section) is also very nice. Large rooms, new, nice pool area, right by Sea World.

San Diego is a very family friendly city. The Balboa Park museums are really nice as well with the family. Another area that we enjoy is Cabrillo National Monument , where you can go tide pooling, enjoy nice views and get a little bit of California History.

How are the beaches a little further north? We found some nice looking condos at Del Mar and Solana Beach. Are these family-friendly areas?

Look at the website for www.delmarmotelonthebeach.com This is one of the only hotels in San Diego that is literally on the beach. I've stayed there and it's a great location, near a park, quaint shopping, walking path along the cliffs above the beach, great restaurants: Jake's (very pricey but amazing views), Poseidon's (less pricey, great views, also), and an ice cream/snack bar behind the Poseidon's (right next to the hotel). There are other great cafes and restaurants within walking distance. It is a very safe part of town, rather high-end, actually, which keeps it clean and beautiful.

Here's an addition to that last post about the Del Mar Motel. The San Diego County Fair takes place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds (www.sdfair.com/fair/) from June 14-July 6th (just a few miles from the Del Mar Motel). It'll have lots of exhibits, carnival rides, shows, and performers every evening--your kids will love it. Check out their website for performance schedules.

Del Mar is a nice location between Carlsbad (Legoland) and San Diego (SD Zoo)

Once you decide on an area, you might check the condo listings on vrbo.com. There are quite a few at or near the beaches.
