Whale-watching in March?

In SD 3/18-3/22.  Are there enough whales around then to make a whale-watching trip worth the $$$?  If so, which tour operator do you recommend?

I'd wait until you are here to see what the situation is and then buy tix if it sounds good.

yes

There should be

We just took a trip with H & M Landing and had a good time.

I think all of the tours out of SD are fine though. While out on the water the ships from the other tour companies were hanging out right where our boat was as we watched a couple of whales.

The ship captains talk to each other and help each other out with whale spotting.

take riffsmom's advice. march is near the end of the northern migration. any whales still passing will be several miles off the coast. the boat captains generally decide on a day to day basis if the trip is worthwhile.

Also know that the operators offer a "guarantee" that you will see whales. This does not mean that you will see whales on your trip. It only means that if you do not see whales on your trip, they will give you a free voucher for a future trip (within a year).
