another area question

We are 2 couples (aged around 50). We will visit San Diego in July for 3 days. We wont have a car. We like to walk in pedestrian areas if there is some. We want to be central, near shops and restaurants. We would like an animated area. We would love to go on the beach maybe for half a day. Which areas would be a better choice for us ?

Thank you very much.

There are no "pedestrian areas" except for sidewalks and malls. I imagine without a car you'd be best off staying somewhere downtown .There are many hotels and restaurants and bars, etc.

Some of those hotels face San Diego Bay.There's a shopping area for crafts and tourist items called Seaport Village and there's a regular mall with clothing etc called Horton Plaza.

From this area you can also take the hop on hop off tour and go to Balboa Park where you'll find craft/artisan shops, museums, gardens etc. and our zoo.

It will also take you to our Old Town State Park with its Mexican flavor and across the bay to a beach area called Coronado.

You can stay in the Gaslamp or harbor area which are both downtown. You can take the ferry to Coronado from downtown and stroll the beach.

www.travelzoo.com and www.fatwallet.com might have some hotel specials for downtown/gaslamp/harbor area hotels.

Downtown has many restaurants and also has a medium sized shopping mall with a Macy's and Nordstrom.

You may also like staying in La Jolla. There is a village with shops, restaurants and the beach within walking distance. It isn't central, however. For the budget minded I like the Best Western Inn by the Sea. Oh, and you can walk to see the Sea Lions. La Jolla is really beautiful, but I may be biased :)

Downtown would be good for high rise hotels, some theater, some shopping but no beach.

Is it possible to travel by bus or trolley from La Jolla to Down Town ?

The reason I didn't suggest La Jolla in the first places is that it is easier there with a car.

ALSO there are hotels with "La JOlla" in the name that are not in the beach area we call the cove or the shores.

There IS a bus the #30 but it takes a while to get downtown or to other places. IF you are looking for a mostly "beach" vacation that is one thing but if you are trying to "see" San Diego with NO car then it is not that convenient to stay in La Jolla.

IF you rent a car that is a different story!
