Temperature during week after Christmas

Our family of four is thinking of visiting San Diego for the week after Christmas. Would it be warm enough to head to the beach to swim? Is there a public transit system or would we need to rent a car? With appreciation!!

Weather.com is a great site to check average temps in any city for current and future dates.

The temperature could be beach weather in late Dec. The average high temp is around 68 but some years the temperature will hit the 80's however unless you bring a full wetsuit the water will be extremely cold.

California in December is anything goes as far as weather is concerned! It could be warm and sunny and gorgeous beach weather or we could have a storm come in and it could be cold and rainy. Definitely no guarantess. Fortunately with San Diego, there is so much cool stuff to do that no matter what the weather does turn out to be, you will have a great time! Chances are better that the weather will be nice but I'm making no promises!

We have vacationed in this area around New Year's a few times. The sun feels wonderfully warm on winter-weary bodies and we wore shorts, capris & sandals during the day. Our teenage boys swam in the heated pool but the air didn't feel hot enough for my husband and me to want to get wet. The only people in the ocean were surfers in full wetsuits.

When the sun goes down you are quickly reminded that it is winter (chilly, not cold), and we learned to take jeans, socks & shoes, and light fleece jackets with us in the car if we were going to be outdoors in the evening. ~Natasha

San Diego is not as warm as most people think. I was still in a full wetsuit in July! August through October are generally our warmest months, though now it's November and still very hot.

In the last 3 years, it was definitely not warm enough in December to swim without a full wetsuit. In fact, it'll most likely be too cold to lay out and wear shorts as well. But if you're coming from a cold climate, you might think it's warm, while the locals are freezing and wearing winter gear!
