The Coaster train

We will be in SD in July and are thinking of taking the Coaster from SD to Oceanside and return. Will go as tourists of course so we are wondering is this a good trip for sightseeing along the coast and even picture taking?

Thx

The northern half of that ride, from about Solana Beach to Oceanside, is very pretty and largely near the coast, though not always right next to it. It's definitely a good sightseeing trip, I don't know how practical picture taking would be.

Amtrak's Pacific Surfliners run from San Diego to Oceanside as well and actually run more often than the Coasters, especially on weekends. They give you more options for making that trip.

Oceanside is fine, but it's not cute--it's heavily influenced by the large Camp Pendleton Marine base just to the north.

if I were you, for sight seeing Id get off in at either the Solana Beach or Carlsbad stops either coming and going and spend some time there, there are shops, restaurants, bars, and beach to sightsee and picture take.

A bit longer trip, but still great views, is to take the AmTrak all the way to San Juan Capistrano. The train from Solana Beach to San Juan is a lovely ride (be sure to get seats on the ocean side).

You can tour the lovely Mission in San Juan Capistrano (where the returning swallows are celebrated each year) and they have some cute restaurants in town too. The Mission gardens are famous as well.

The Missions are an integral part of the history of California and San Juan Capistrano is one of the prettiest. http://www.missionsjc.com/

While a pleasant ride, the only truly scenic portion (and it is highly scenic) is the short portion through Del Mar where the tracks are right on the beach. I disagree that the northern portion (north of Solana Beach) is particularly scenic; while the tracks are parallel to the beach, you mostly cannot see the beach and it is not that scenic. The poster that recommended getting off at Solana Beach or Carlsbad Village (also Encinitas, but Amtrak does not stop there) is correct, but check schedules because, as mentioned, the Coaster is mainly set up for commuting,. That said, you can always return by Amtrak (expensive) or bus: NCTD Breeze bus # 101 which runs along the Coaster route Solana Beach to Oceanside. #101 connects to San Diego MTS. See www.sdcommute.com and www.gonctd.com for bus and train details. www.amtrak.com for Amtrak.

I agree that either Solana Beach or Carlsbad are nicer destinations. As far as shops, restaurants and scenery.

Where the train stops in Oceanside there is a very nice stretch of beach and a nice pier to walk out on. There just isn't as much in the way of a quaintness like Solana Beach or Carlsbad. If you do go to Oceanside a nice place to have lunch with a view is 333 Pacific.

In terms of train service, Amtrak stops in Solana Beach but not Carlsbad--only the Coaster stops there. You can connect to either north towards Oceanside or south towards Solana Beach via bus line 101, which is on a road adjacent to the coast much of the way.

Correct, Amtrak does not stop in Carlsbad. BTW, Carlsbad has two stations: The "Carlsbad Village" station would be the better one to stop in.
