Driving between San Diego to Las Vegas - Anything to see?

We are an Aussie family who will be driving from Las Vegas to San Diego in November and would love to know if there is anywhere that we should stop off and look at, major sights, must do's? Is there a preferred route to take ? We can find heaps of information on LA to LV but not LV to SD.... Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance

Fastest way is to take Interstate 15,in which case you will see all the things mentioned in the LA to Vegas information.

You could take Interstate 15 to 215 to 60 to 10 and swing thru Palm Springs.

Take the Palm Springs tram to the top of the mountain.Lots of activities in Palm Springs. You could then head up to Joshua Tree National Park.

From there take the road up to Amboy.See historic Roys Cafe/hotel on old Route 66.Run Route 66 for a few miles, then head to Kelso.Stop at the restored train depot that is the headquarters of the Mojave National Preserve. From Kelso head to Cima(worlds largest forests of Joshua Trees nearby near Teutonia Peak)and rejoin Interstate 15 headed to Vegas.

Your post was titled SD to Vegas, the text said Vegas to San Diego.

Just reverse the directions I gave you based on the direction of the trip.

Have fun.

Are you planning 1,2 or 3 days between LV and SD? I'd take at least 2 days and stay overnight in Twentynine Palms or Palm Springs (great time of year for that). Also take the scenic drive between Palm Springs and San Diego via Palm Desert, Palms to PInes Highway, Borrego Springs and Julian. Also don't miss Mojave National Preserve and Joshua Tree NP on your way as has been mentioned mefore. Fill your tank in Las Vegas before heading to 29Palms or PS.

Tet?

Why Twentynine Palms?

What is there other than a military base?

Im curious, I honestly dont know. If that close to Palm Springs/Palm Desert why would someone stay in Twentynine Palms?

Don't you really know GoodBeer? Not everybody wants to stay Coachella Valley. Some prefer small desert towns and 29Palms is at the entrance of Joshua Tree NP and makes a good stop after (or before) visiting it. 29Palms also has an abundance of murals, dozens of them and there are people who like murals. And those hotels in 29Palms aren't there because all folks want to stay in Palm Springs: tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g60870-Twentynine_Pal… Btw, in 2 weeks we probably try this hotel ourselves http://www.nipton.com/hotel.html and play some rounds in PS later. Can't keep DW away from Cabazon ;)

Well First of all, There is much to see in San Diego and Los Angeles. So before heading up the #15 freeway to LV you might want to do these two cities. The # 15 North is the easiest route to LV.

Here I would like to give you a few words of caution. Buy a throwaway cell phone in case of breakdown between Barstow and LV. The emergency number is 911. Also bring with you plenty of water, ( 1gallon per person) especially in summer time.. As a person who has had a long time living in the desert I have had need to use the aforementioned items. Gasoline (Petrol) ~ Fill up in Barstow. and refill in LV on the way back

You may gaze in awe at the desert scenery free of charge LOL

Oh and do not exceed speed limits... Our constables (California Highway Patrol) love to give citations.

There is NOTHING to see in 29 Palms except a Marine Corps base. Nothing i n Yucca Valley or other little towns around there..

I would check out Calico Ghost Town. Walter Knott of Knott's Berry Farm fame kept it alive.
