Im heading to San Diego for work this year. Few quick Q's for you SD experts- How far are the beaches (good swimming) in San Diego from the Gaslamp area? Any idea of cost from airport to gaslamp area?

SD AIrport to Gaslamp should be under $15 for a cab. There is an airport shuttle bus that departs from in front of the terminal to a stop in the Gaslamp for $2.25. Check www.sdcommute.com.

With regard to swimming, understand that the Pacific Ocean off San Diego has a southerly current and is relatively cold -- particularly if you compare to waters off the Australia east coast or Florida here in the States. Most people would not swim at this time without at least a partial wetsuit. In the summer say July/August/Early Sept, water temp will be in the high 60s / low 70s (F of course).

Easiest beach for swimming from Gaslamp would be Coronado. You can get there by a ferry across the bay and then a bus ride across the island to the beach near the Hotel Del. Alternatives would be a longer bus ride to Pacific Beach or La Jolla Shores.

La Jolla Cove is the home of serious, open water swimmer and the site of the annual La Jolla Roughwater Swim, the 81st of which will be swam on Sept. 11, 2011.

La Jolla is about 20 minutes north of the Gaslamp.

Now if you just mean splashing around in the water, I'd head to Coronado.

scottca075, Coronado has its own annual rough water swim on the 4th of July. It happens near the main lifeguard tower and south of the naval base.
