Shark Watching Day Trip (Great White Sharks)

Hello,

I was wondering if there are any 1 day/afternoon trips to go shark watching and see Great White Sharks. I saw 3-4 day trips to Guadalupe Island but was wondering if there was any shorter trips around the $500-$1000 price range. Any Ideas?

Thanks

I have never heard of a shark watching tour here!

The only trips I see when using Google are diving trips to Mexico.

Usually folks go on whale watching trips here ,especially in winter.

There are no organized tours because the shark is not migratory like the whale is. Because of that, having a business establish tours doesn't make sense.

Your best bet is to get a private charter to try finding a shark.

There are organized trips but they are expensive like the one you have already found.

Here is one of them: islander-charters.com/schedule/sharkdiving-s…

drill-n-fill:

Great Whites actually do migrate, this was actually a fairly recent development roughly 10 years ago: …stanford.edu/news/…sharks-19.html

The reason there are not many tours is because they are typically far off the coast and they aren't easy to spot like whales who obviously need air to breathe and have well documented migratory patterns.

Thanks.

That seems to be a very limited study. i wonder if there has been more extensive research done since '02.

Stagsold -

the tour you found already, the one for about $1000, what do you get for that?

I wonder is shark watching is done like I see on TV. You don't wait for the shark to appear, but you try to draw them in with chunks you dump in the ocean (cut up meat with blood). This seems to be what they do in South Africa. I don't know if there are a lot of great whites off the coast of California.

That area in South Africa has more white sharks than anywhere else in the world! There is nothing like that here!!!

There are a BOATLOAD of great whites off the CA coast. San Diego had a great white death 2 1/2 years ago. Malibu is a major area for juvenile great whites and the islands (Farallon Islands, Año Nuevo Island) and Point Reyes and Tomales Point.

They do migrate in a huge circle from Hawaii to San Diego/Baja California, up to Nor Cal, back to Hawaii..... Don't you watch Shark Week Drill?? :)

I am glad it's illegal. Can you imagine in the game parks in African if they'd dump raw meat to draw lions for tourists? I don't know why they'd allow that in South Africa.
