There are lots of beaches. Each has a slightly different vibe and hotels at different prices. July is HIGH season at the beach so expect to pay waaay over $200. Directly across San Diego Bay from the Marriott Marquis is the city of Coronado which has a gorgeous wide white sandy beach.

The area has a small town feel with a main street with restaurants/small shops etc. Depending on your hotel price point choices range from 5*****Hotel Del Coronado right on the sand to the Glorietta Bay Inn across the street and then some lower priced 3*** like La Avenida nearby.

Facing SD Bay and a short drive/walk/bike ride to the ocean is the Marriott Coronado. The area is reached by a short drive over a no toll bridge or by water taxi/passenger ferry ride taking about 15min.

The other area in SD with the most hotels along the beachfront is Pacific Beach. It has a cement sidewalk along the beachfront that we call a "boardwalk". You can walk/bike/skate along there. The vibe is beachy/surfer with low key restaurants and bars. A high end hotel there would be the Pacific Terrace and others nearby might be the Ocean Park Inn or the Best Western Blue Sea Lodge. It would take about 15-20min. by car/taxi to get to the airport.

The Hotel Del Coronado is a real treat! The resort is very historic with a great pool area, spa and the rooms are very nice, also. We stayed in the Victorian section of the hotel and our room overlooked the inner courtyard and gazebo. :)

You don't mention budget.

I'd say the Hotel del Coronado, but it isn't cheap. Other than that there are limited hotels on the ocean. Pacific Beach has a couple, La Jolla has a couple, there is one in Del Mar and some in Carlsbad close to the beach.

If you can give an idea of budget and what you want to see/do it would be easier.

I you want a hotel not too far from the airport, you are fairly limited. Is it possible to extend your stay at your original hotel and "commute" to Coronado and its beaches? There is a ferry that takes you across.

You don't mention budget or if you will have a car. Both make a difference.

I think the Glorietta Bay Inn is a good choice on Coronado. Just across the street from the beach and in the nice Village. I also like the suggestion of the Coronado Marriott. Elle has a good point about staying put at the Marriott and making the short commute to Coronado from there.

Hi fatz888 -

Scottca075 mentioned that there a couple of hotels on the beach in La Jolla. Those would be the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club and the Hotel La Jolla - both right on La Jolla Shores Beach.

Other alternatives just across the road (Coast Blvd.) from the beach, would be Scripps Inn and B&B By the Sea. Both of these are close to the Children's Pool, where there is a seal colony, and the La Jolla Cove - a great spot for snorkeling and swimming.

Keep in mind that July and August are high season at the beach and it's not too soon to make reservations. By the way, La Jolla is about 10 miles north of the San Diego Airport.
