beachfront hotel/lodging

hi all...

even though i've been to san diego more times than i can count...it's been a while.

my wife and i are considering going for a few days at the end of august (mid week). we'd like to stay somewhere beachfront along either pacific or mission beach. i've checked out the blue sea lodge...but it's a bit excessive $ in my opinion. we'd 'like' to keep it around $100 - 150/nite, if that's even possible.

another beach area isn't out of the question. we just want to feel the breeze and hear the ocean from our lodging...aaaahhhhh!

(scottca...if you respond to this...what's up, amigo!)

many thanks!

We stayed in a condo in the aforementioned Capri by the Sea in February. All of the units have a large window overlooking Pacific Beach. I recommend it.

We walked to dinner most nights although there is a good supermarket ablocks away which supplied us with breakfast ingredients and snacks and one night we did some great fresh fish at 'home'.

I think your budget is a little low if you want oceanfront.

thanks for the never-ending list...lol. i've checked out quite a few of those. they're either unavailable for our dates or are more than i was planning to spend. what kills me is that we can stay in our usual ocean/beachfront condo on maui for far less than what many of these places charge.

perceived value....yeah, i know. we're thinking either san diego...where i'd much rather stay, or vegas...which i really don't care for and it's nearly as hot there as is here.

if anyone knows any hidden gems that scott didn't list...or possibly another area, maybe a bit further north for us...scott said he'd buy you a drink!

<edit> thanks, puter...i checked...they're booked. and yes...i know i'm shooting low on the price...maybe up to $200 might be a tad more realistic. we're no frills kinda folk...just don't want to stay in a dump

Hi there Billy, long time no see on the AZ board! What this little gem has going for it in Del Mar is the location - on the sand, gorgeous wide open beach. Tucked between million dollar houses on the waterfront. Rooms are terribly outdated and in need of a good overhaul, but the common areas outside, patios, adirondacks, card tables, etc. are nicely done and updated. The view is awesome and it is right next to Jake's Steak House (my favorite) and also The Poseidon (OK, not as good), the train goes by a couple times a day and if you want you can walk into the village of Del Mar, which is charming.

Not beach front, but walkable, the Hotel La Jolla at the La Jolla Shore has just reopened under Kimpton Hotels management. They may be running specials.

Be careful about Del Mar. There's events at the Race Track end of August and 1) places to stay can be expensive 2) it will be very busy / traffic, etc.
