Here are several restaurants from the Gaslamp Association directory as a starting point.

I've not been to any, so you can check for reviews on TA or maybe other posters will be more helpful with recommendations.

I'm not a huge fan of any of the sushi places downtown. That being said there are couple that are fine, but not my tops in San Diego.

Katsuya, Nobu and Taka would all be enjoyable but can be pricey.

Id add Ra and Ogawashi to the 3 Pirates has already listed above.

Ogawashi is new, it opened about a month ago.

Doesn't Sushi Deli also have one downtown?

I have been to the one in Hillcrest but not the one downtown so can't say it is great but it won't be as expensive as Nobu!!!

The Gaslamp is mostly corporate sushi. Katsuya and Nobu are the best, Ra is average at best. Sushi Deli is "discount sushi" so it isn't going to be the best in the Gaslamp, but it is decent and will cost 1/3 of what Nobu would.

Since you are coming from LA, I'll assume you have a car.

I'd make a reservation at Sushi Ota in Pacific Beach and go there.

Hane Sushi and Azuki Sushi in Bankers Hill (just up from the Gaslamp) are good as well, but not as good as Ota.

I think Hane is just as good as Ota. Hane is actually Ota's sister restaurant.
