Two days to sightsee - Been there a few times - now what?

We will be in SD this Thursday through Sunday. We've been a few times this same time of year and will be staying at the Residence Inn on Pacific Highway from Thu. night through Sat. Then going to the Marriott Marina on Harbor Drive for Saturday night. We've done some sightseeing before (Midway, Coronado Island, LaJolla, Gaslamp, Balboa Park, Las Americas Mall). This time we are renting a car. We might like to do a little shopping, but that isn't a necessity. If the weather is nice we would like to be outside some, even though I'm always disappointed it's too cold for the beach or diving. What would you suggest? We are in our 50s.

Hi Jan_S

Well, hmmm, let me think. Have you done a Coastal drive up to Carlsbad or Oceanside? Since you'll have a car it's a pleasant drive. You can stop along the way at antique stores, have a bite to eat, etc. Actually, I think I'd probably take the 5 Freeway North (as far as you want to go whether it be Carlsbad or Oceanside) and then drive the Coastal drive back down to San Diego.

Have you been to the Little Italy Mercado on Saturday morning?

Oops ...

Well, for whatever reason TA isn't letting me provide links. So google ...

A short walk from the Residence Inn is Little italy.

Also, have you been to Cabrillo National Monument? I would really only recommend it on a clear day where you can see forever. There also tidepools to explore and hiking trails.

Have you done a harbor cruise?

What about a couple of hours in Old Town? You could take the Trolley from the Residence Inn or drive.

On the drive along the coast you might want to check out Cedros Ave

You said you've been to Las Americas. A little different experience for shopping + a casino is only approx 30 min from SD at Viejas

Oh, you might want to also consider taking a drive to Julian as long as the weather is good.

If you want to be outside you might want to also consider a walking or segway tour. There are several different companies. Here's one

What about whale watching? It's an incredible experience and the season just started.

I did not know there was whale watching now. That sounds interesting. Thank you for the idea. I will google it to see where to go.

I've never been to Carlsbad or little Italy. Thank you for mentioning then. I thought Carlsbad was too far. I'll look into that. Thank you for answering.

The Market on Saturday is wonderful!

If you head to Carlsbad there's an Outlet Center if you feel like shopping. Also, Del Mar Fairgrounds puts on a holiday light show where you drive around the track tuned into a radio station listening to festive songs. Some of the displays are really creative!

Do you gamble? You can always hit up a casino and there's nice scenery on the way. Maybe visit Stone Brewery? Safari Park?

To do a little shopping I'd head up to the Outlets at Viejas near Alpine. it is a nice little outlet mall attached to a casino. They have ice skating this time of year and it is a very different feel than the rest of San Diego because you are at a higher elevation.

I'd also wander over to San Diego's version of Rockefeller Center in Downtown, the skating rink at SD's NBC on Broadway and 3rd St. It is walkable from either hotel. It is fun to go at night, get a cocoa from Starbucks or Panera and watch the skaters, ditto for the outdoor rink at the Hotel del. If you've never been to the Hotel del Coronado during Christmas time, go, it is a treat.

Other ideas:

- Wild Animal Park in/near Escondido (sp?)

- Drive to Julian, northeast of SD. Nice drive; cute town.

- With a decent start you could go up 1 to Oceanside, then I 5 to San Clemente, then 1 up coast to Laguna Beach or so. Then return to SD on I 5. Stop and see Mission San Juan Capistrano (built in 1782)
